Today, something tragic happened. While I was brushing my teeth, my iPhone slipped out of my still-sleepy hand and onto the counter, at which point I heard a sharp “click” sound and saw, to my utter disappointment, a spidered mess of glass on my unprotected iPhone”s sleek white back.
Now, if you know me, you know I love my iPhone. My iPhone is my best buddy. He’s like the white Power Ranger, the entire Justice League, both young and old Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Gandalf rolled together. I call him Iggy.
Normally, I keep Iggy in a protective case of some sort. I personally use an OtterBox Commuter Case and a screen protector to protect my phone. But recently, I got a little bit arrogant and took Iggy out of his case that I had carelessly broken and peeled off his screen protector. And now this?
Luckily, the world runs on morons like me, which means we are catered to in the most mild and helpful of ways. That’s a flowery way of saying that Apple has a warranty for one year after the date of purchase, and they’ll replace your phone as much as you want for that year. So I’m off to the land of Mac after work to get me a new Iggy just in time for the weekend.
But for those of us who love our smartphones but can’t get them replaced, there are some really easy ways to keep your phone protected such as cases, screen protectors, and other cool stuff. What we’re going to talk about isn’t necessarily what products you should get, but why you should get certain products. There are really important reasons to keep your phone protected at all times, but here are the three most convincing.
YOU CAN’T / WON’T GET IT REPLACED
One year can go by really fast, and considering that one year is the standard warranty length on most smartphones, it’s getting really important to take good care of your phone for the long haul. A full year without warranty coverage represents infinite opportunities to break your phone and not be able to replace it without buying a brand new one at full price.
Make sure you have a full-body, shock-proof case on your phone to prevent it from cracking when dropped or to prevent any kind of internal damage that results from drops and bumps. And keep the case on at all times. Don’t let what happened to me happen to you.
When the time comes for a new phone release that you absolutely have to get on the day it comes out, you’re going to want the money to get it. With a modern smartphone in good condition, you can net almost the full price of the new phone you want by selling your old one to a friend, putting it up for auction on eBay, or finding a buyer for it on Craigslist.
Just make sure to be safe with all the online transactions you make, and you’ll get paid lots of cash for your old phone so you can upgrade early for free!
YOUR PHONE WON’T WORK AS WELL
This is probably the best reason to keep your phone protected at all times. Scratches and cracks on a screen or a backplate can get in the way of typing and surfing, a scratch on your camera’s lens can throw off the focus and make every picture blurry, and there is still the question of buttons and how well the phone works if they break.
All in all, there are too many things you can do to your phone in terms of physical damage that can plain-old ruin the way the phone works in the first place. Keep a case and a screen protector on it to keep it as safe as possible. There’s no use in trying to keep a phone for the long term without guaranteeing that it will keep working.
