Choosing a PC Power Supply for a Gamer System

Most hard-core gamers, who want to build a monstrous gaming machine, would face this dilemma of choosing high end PC power supply. The reason however is simple and rational. When you stuff your system with high-end components capable of delivering surreal, sublime performance, you would have to provide it with an adequate amount of power, to keep it up and running.

However, most people shell their indispensable money on buying more powerful hardware specifications including a more efficient PC power supply, without giving any second thoughts on how actually does computer make use of them. Let’s understand the basics of choosing a power supply for a gaming system:

1. Firstly, assess your hardware. Do not buy just any random Power supply. Buy only that much, what you need. Analyse your hardware specifications, which include the motherboard, processor, GPU, cooling system, amount of disks and IDE devices connected.

2. Secondly, keep it compact. While choosing a power supply, make sure the size is compact and fits into the metal casing of your PC comfortably.

3. Thirdly, power. Well, this factor is crucial. Estimating the power requirements of any gamer system can be slightly tricky. It is very important however, not to overdo it. However, if you do not want any glitches to come what-so-ever, buy a 1000 watt OCZ PSU. It is will be subtly enough for all your gaming needs. Nevertheless, suppose you have a Radeon HD 6850, which requires a power-supply of 550 watts, buying a 700 watt ATX power-supply makes complete sense.

Do remember to keep a slight overhead, just in case the power requirements escalate during run-time. (Games with highly detailed graphics, consume more system usage) Generically, it is advisable to buy a PSU having 30% more power than the maximum power estimation. (This is because PSU while converting AC power to DC store the charge in device called capacitors, whose charge deteriorates with time)

4. Fourthly, heat. For stats, the PSU will lose about 2-5 watts per one degree increase in heat (>50 degree). Hence, avoid buying poor quality units who do not provide an adequate amount of heat-resistance.
Moreover, look for a PSU with a better inbuilt cooling system with ideally a low noise 120 or 140 mm size fan. Besides avoiding buying PSU combo deals, wherein you get a PSU free with the casing itself. It is very much likely that the PSU would be of inferior quality. Look for PSUs with higher energy and efficiency ratings.

Look for manufacturers who provide products with protection features (OVP, OCP, OPP, etc.). In layman language, they save your system from getting tripped off in case of current, voltage or power failure.

Why is it so Important to Have a Decent PC Power Supply?

It is extremely important, not to get your gaming system, underpowered. The downside of buying a mediocre PSU is that, it would eventually leave your system underpowered over a course of time, causing damage to components like GPU, RAM, motherboard, etc. Besides, the rig will get heat up, as even the cooling systems won’t work fluently. Chances are subtly high that if you continue using high-end hardware specifications by courtesy of a low powered PSU, you may end up roasting your rig.
